About Us

Phi Mu National Founding:

Phi Mu was founded in 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, by Mary Ann (Dupont) Lines, Mary Elizabeth (Myrick) Daniel and Martha Bibb (Hardaway) Redding. It began as the Philomathean Society, a literary society, and is the second oldest secret society for women in the nation. The Philomathean Society became Phi Mu Fraternity in 1904.

Phi Mu at Mississippi State:

The Kappa Alpha chapter of Phi Mu was founded in 1962 at Mississippi State University.    Almost fifty years after its founding, the chapter still carries the charter members' legacy of strong leadership, tight bonds of sisterhood, and pride in the betterment of the chapter and community.  Alumnae from the chapter have continued on to do amazing things... from dentists, flight attendants, attorneys, teachers, nurses, doctors, leaders in the business world, and countless other professions, Phi Mu Kappa Alpha alumnae have proven themselves as successful mothers, wives, friends, and career women.  The one link that ties all these diverse women together is the bond of sisterhood forged in college.

The Kappa Alpha Chapter Association:

On May 31, 2007, Shani Burley-Moore decided that this link could and should continue after graduation and that the bond of friendship can be established between women who were not even in the chapter during the same years.  She sent an email to several Phi Mu sisters from Mississippi State asking about interest in starting a Chapter Association, and by 2008, an Executive Council had been established, several newsletters published, and a website created.  To top it all off, the first annual reunion was held at the Phi Mu house on campus in the summer of 2008 (you can check out pictures from that event here!)  Since then, the Chapter Association has been working to assist the Mississippi State Chapter in continuing the excellence that is Phi Mu.

The Chapter Association is up to great things!  We hope that you'll take this as an invitation to join along on this fun part of your Phi Mu membership!
